Chehalis Deane Hegner
FEMINSMO centers on the liberation of women from systems of male oppression. In Chastity, for example, I give form to the tangled intersections of eroticism, feminism, rape culture, and the overwhelming force of male dominance. The work situates these themes within the shared saline origins of the womb and the sea—environments from which all creatures emerge—underscoring how deeply these dynamics are embedded in both our bodies and our histories.

2017, Catherine Young with retired mechanical shark made by Arthur Ganson and Doug Fitch. This shark flew across the ceiling of the Roxy Nightclub in Boston in the early 1990's. It now enjoys its retirement at Halo Hill Studios.
